Curious about what potential smash hits this summer has just around the corner? Here are just a few of the most anticipated films of mid-2022.
Top Gun: Maverick (May 27th)
Thirty-six years after the original Top Gun– a genre-defining action movie that was nominated for several academy awards and won one for Berlin’s “Take My Breath Away”– was released, theatergoers can catch up on the endeavors of pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell as reprised by Tom Cruise in this year’s Top Gun: Maverick.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie (May 27th)
Few contemporary adult animated series have quite the base of diehard fans as Bob’s Burgers, which has run on FOX for over a decade and now has its own spinoff film coming to theaters in May. The movie will be Bob’s Burgers creator Loren Bouchard’s first stint as a feature-length director and will be a musical.
Lightyear (June 17th)
Also in the realm of animated feature-length films, this time with a more family-oriented focus, is Lightyear, Disney’s first major movie release to star the beloved Toy Story character as the titular protagonist. Fans of the Toy Story franchise are no doubt excitedly awaiting the release date to see more of the space adventurer’s escapades.
Elvis (June 24th)
Elvis stars Austin Butler as The King himself in a musical biopic set to release this June. The late Elvis Presley has been the subject of many a film and starred in a number of them himself in his heyday, and many are looking to Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis as an exciting musical exploration at the singer’s career, especially following the slew of celebrated musician biopics that have graced the silver screen in recent years.
Thor: Love and Thunder (July 8th)
2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder follows in the wake of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok, the colorful and fun-loving third installment in the Marvel character’s series after Thor (2011) and Thor: The Dark World (2013.) Like Ragnarok, Love and Thunder is directed by Taika Waititi, who has billed the movie as a “romance” story. The title font is certainly steeped in retro spirit and pays tribute to wrestling legend Owen Hart.
NOPE (July 22nd)
Nope, stylized as NOPE, is the upcoming film from Jordan Peele of Get Out and Us fame; like his prior movies, the comedian and filmmaker serves as screenwriter, director, and producer. The story deals with horse ranchers who encounter a mysterious supernatural force in their small town. Given Peele’s track record as an acclaimed creator of horror films, NOPE has audiences anxious to see more of his creative work in the genre.
