Fun fact: Lexington is a great place to find yourself if you happen to have a sweet tooth. And while national chains have plenty of tasty stuff, all the locals and foodies know that the best treats are found in the city’s one-of-a-kind bakeries. Case in point:
Magee’s Bakery
726 E Main Street
If being around since 1956 is any indication of quality, then Magee’s has already cemented itself as arguably Lexington’s most iconic bakery. Actually tasting what they have to offer, of course, is all the proof you need of why their donuts, breads, and pastries are so beloved. It’s a great breakfast and lunch spot, too, boasting an extensive menu beyond just their delicious desserts.
North Lime Coffee and Donuts
101 West London Avenue/ 3101 Clays Mill Road
This local chain can only be found in Lexington and Louisville, with two of the three locations residing right here in the former. As one might gather from its name, North Lime is famous for its donuts, which many would describe as being unparalleled. If you don’t know what a “donut schedule” is, you can still subscribe to its text notifications– that’s how devoted Lexingtonians are to the place. Regardless, their rotating cast of flavors (and perennial favorites) are sure to impress.
Martine’s Pastries
400 E Third Street
Martine’s has been recognized not just locally but nationally for their wedding cakes, but you don’t have to be tying the knot to enjoy their famous French baked goodies. If you want the single best eclair in the city, for instance, you’ll want to head to Martine’s, but you can also find freshly-made staples like chocolate chip cookies.
Caramanda’s Bake Shoppe
2901 Richmond Road/ 332 Southland Drive
Caramanda’s makes an incredible number of different cupcakes, cookies, and other sweets. They’re known for their custom cakes, be it for weddings or birthday parties, but their most distinctive offerings include traditional treats from the Appalachian and Kentuckian region, based upon generations-old family recipes.
Habibis Sweets & Pastries
2417 Nicholasville Road
This local favorite serves up authentic Palestinian baked goods ranging from Baklawa to Kunafa, as well as various almond, pistachio, and other nut-based pastries. You can also get not only coffee but herbal tea to go with your pastries. Habibis is also known for having a delicious selection of vegan-friendly items, so everyone can enjoy their baked goodies.
Mondelli’s Bake Shop
3120 Pimlico Parkway
Mondelli’s is another top-tier local place to get a custom cake, but you can also get cannoli or brownies while you’re at it, as well as pick from a rotating selection of breakfast pastries. They’re a great place to go for holiday sweets trays and hand-decorated seasonal cookies. You can take a look at their gallery of various elaborate desserts to see just how detailed (and adorable, such is in the case of Halloween cookies decorated like bats and Thanksgiving cupcakes topped by miniature icing turkeys) these sweets can get.
